Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

Yoga is gradually becoming an accepted and even respected form of exercise that seems to aid in providing relief for many of the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.

According to the American Yoga Association website, practicing Yoga can help to improve your overall health and mental state.

For the Multiple Sclerosis sufferer, Yoga techniques can be beneficial in helping to relieve some of the common symptoms that are experienced. Those symptoms include such things as balance, flexibility, depression, anxiety and stress.

Since many of those with Multiple Sclerosis suffer from these very symptoms, perhaps it would be worth exploring the concept of yoga in a bit more depth.

Yoga is a form of exercise that is not strenuous and it can be done by most anyone, regardless of their physical condition. Many type of Yoga exercises can be done from a chair or even from a bed.

When you are doing Yoga exercises, you are working to stretch the large muscles that are located in the arms, back and legs. Since the muscles are being stretched and limbered up, it help to increase flexibility in the body. As a side benefit, it also helps to reduce the incidences of muscle spasms, which are quite common in MS sufferers.

Those of us who have, or are familiar with, Multiple Sclerosis are very much aware that standard medical advice is to avoid stress and get plenty of rest. Yoga can assist us in that pursuit as well. In Yoga, you are taught relaxation and meditation methods. You learn how to actually relax your mind and essentially stop your thoughts for brief periods of time. This is said to give your mind time to rest also and allows you to truly, totally relax.

Another technique that is taught is breathing. These techniques are helpful in reducing stress and are also said to assist in pain relief. The breathing techniques that are taught help to strengthen your respiratory muscles and helps you to improve your concentration.

According to the American Yoga Association site, an optimal daily Yoga routine consists of approximately 15 minutes of exercises, 15 or 20 minutes of meditation and a few minutes of breathing.

Based on all of the above, in my opinion, it would certainly be worth at least consulting with your doctor and see how he or she feels about the possibility of you attempting this form of exercise. Possibly, your doctor will be able to direct you to a well qualified Yoga instructor in your area.
